zeterre was founded with a focus on creating unique outdoor ambiance and innovative design for exclusive homes. Each garden that Zeterre creates is an expression of the owner, the architecture and the interiors of the building. Our goal is to make all of these important elements flow together seamlessly with the garden.
We invite you to explore our diverse portfolio and testimonials. Our work and very happy clients truly speak for themselves. If you would like further detail as to who we are, and how we can help you with your project, please contact our office to schedule a consultation.
Zeterre was retained to remodel the existing landscape of this hillside residence in order to create an outdoor environ that compliments the existing contemporary main house and feeds the client’s desire to be surrounded by original and innovative art. After nearly two years of construction, this project was named by California Landscape Contractors Association to be the best landscape installed in the entire state for all projects (commercial or residential) for 2010 via the Stuart Sberper Sweepstakes Trophy Award given on November 12, 2010.
zeterre maintains a uniquely small firm that allows it to focus great attention on each and every project. We pride ourselves on the attention that we can give to our clients and believe that this attention to detail is what makes our projects stand out from the rest.
November 17, 2011:
Zeterre has been honored by the California Landscape Contractors Association for a second year in a row. Our Los Altos Hills Grande Estate project has been awarded the prestigious President's Award. Head over to the "Modern/Exotic" section of our portfolio to see the project for yourself.
June 28, 2011:
Over the years we have found that many of our clients cannot fully visualize what their new landscape will look like. To remedy this, we now offer full 3D animations that allow our clients to experience their garden before construction begins. For examples, check out the "In Progress" section under "Projects".
Jarrod Ryan Baumann, ASLA
Licensed Landscape Architect,
California License # 5613
Owner of Zeterre Landscape Architecture
Jarrod's role at Zeterre is that of founder and principal Landscape Architect. As such, he has been responsible for the design and creative direction as well as the overall operation of the firm since it opened in 2007. To accomplish this, Jarrod draws upon his 14 years of experience developing projects ranging from urban residences to massive civic parks, as well as his time at Cal Poly Pomona under the tutelage of such greats as Andy Cao and Takeo Uesugi. In addition, his work has afforded him the opportunity to travel throughout Italy, Greece, Turkey, Spain, the United Kingdom, and France, studying gardens and concepts that he utilizes in his work on a daily basis. This passion for design started at a young age, growing up in the foothills below Yosemite — riding horses and studying California native plants in their natural habitat. His teen years were spent working with his Grandfather in the family development and real estate companies. Today, Jarrod's unique design sense and strong leadership has helped develop Zeterre into a premiere design firm, as well as earn several awards for the unique and intriguing concepts he develops. He continues to strive to improve Zeterre, bringing in new team members and technologies to help deliver the most innovative and beautiful designs possible to our clients. Jillian Schipper - Designer/Native Garden Specialist
Jillian comes to us with a horticultural background, love for native plants, design and photography. Her perspective keeps our projects focused on water conservation and forward green thinking.
Garrett Paul - Irrigation Designer
While Garrett's degree is in Architecture, his path and passion has pushed him into the field of Landscape Architecture. His experience in urban park development, multi family residential and large estate gardens throughout California has been an asset to our company for the past 5 years. As a Toro certified irrigation designer, he focuses much of his attention designing water conserving irrigation systems for our estate gardens.
Andrew R. Witschonke, ASLA Project Manager/Designer
Since obtaining his bachelors degree in Landscape Architecture from Cal Poly Pomona, Andrew has developed a portfolio of work including high-end residential gardens, regional sports facilities, and civic memorials. A Bay Area native, Andrew brings a passion for design, an eye for detail, and twelve years of 3D modeling and graphics experience to our design team; allowing us to create realistic images of our concepts long before construction begins.
David C. Griffard, ASLA Project Manager/Designer
David has developed a strong construction background and technical expertise since his graduation from Colorado State University. He has spent the past several years working for a prestigious construction firm as a project superintendent, where his duties involved the development of construction documents as well as in-field management on several of the most prestigious estates on the Peninsula. David’s on-the-ground experience helps Zeterre bridge the traditional gap between design and construction. Larissa Janee
Administration/Marketing
Larissa is Zeterre's behind-the-scenes administrator, responsible for managing finances, placing plant orders, dealing with distributors, and keeping track of our clients and their projects.
Zeterre – Inspired by Venice, Italy. Zaterre on the Giudecca in Venice dates back to the 1500's and is one of the earliest examples of "forward thinking" landscape architecture - it perfectly compliments the architectural facades and reflective canal. This promenade has remained nearly untouched and unrevised and yet draws thousands due to its ambiance and sense of place - "Genius loci." Those who know Venice love Zaterre.
Our goal for Zeterre Landscape Architecture is to create designs like Zaterre on the Giudecca that stand the test of time and truly stand out with unforgettable brilliance, undeniable beauty and uniqueness.
This large estate located in the rolling foothills around Saratoga was an ideal place to develop a classic design with innovative additions to create an ideal equestrian estate. Comfortable paths allow for easy horse-back access to every part of the property, including the covered riding arena, stables, and lake. As a special touch, we included hitching posts off the front of the house under the shade of beautiful Coast Live Oaks to allow for quick access to and from the house while enjoying this beautiful property on horseback. To get a better feel for the design, check out our 3D fly-through animation.
This beautiful estate, situated just off the Pebble Beach golf course and with stunning views of Point Lobos, has its design inspired by ornate French gardens such as Versailles and Vaux le Vicompte. Powerful axises draw your eye down from the sweeping veranda into the yard and out towards the beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean and the famous Point Lobos. To help our clients beter understandthe design intent, we provided two conceptual animations of possible designs. An award-winning contemporary Spanish-style home in Palo Alto’s Crescent Park neighborhood gave us the opportunity to design a myriad of distinct intimate spaces in the various courtyards around the residence. Despite their unique character, all the courtyards are unified in theme through the use of classical Mediterranean elements alongside more modern design elements and materials. This contrast creates a sense of excitement that will make this home ideal for entertaining. To experience it yourself, check out the animation by clicking the image at right.
This medium-sized property in suburban Menlo Park was nothing but lawn before Zeterre was allowed to reimagine the space’s potential. The design elements include an infinity edge pool (with swim-up bar), a sunken pool house/detached guest house, custom curved ipe patio space, fire pit, outdoor kitchen, and spacious lawn. These elements come together to create the perfect backyard oasis, whether you’re throwing a catered party, playing fetch with the dog, or relaxing on a warm afternoon. Check out the 3D animation by clicking the image at right to see for yourself.
The owners of this hilltop property with stunning views of the San Francisco Bay wanted to transform their new home into an exciting entertainment venue. To this end, Zeterre incorporated many nuanced spaces, some intended for a small group or individual to stroll through, and others intended for gatherings of dozens of guests. These spaces allow our clients the ability to accommodate their guests while still maintaining functionality for when they wish to enjoy their garden privately. Check out the 3D animation of the design by clicking the image at right.
This modern hill-top home provided an opportunity to use a palette of unique materials and colors along with artistic forms and sculptures to create a landscape that would be both functional and beautiful. The homeowners have a passion for sailing, which is carried out as a theme throughout the design. To get the full picture, check out our 3D animation by clicking the image at right.
